INSPIRATION PARK AT RFK COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

Client: Gonzalez Goodale Architects

A one-third-acre passive park developed as part of LAUSD's new 24-acre Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools. Inspiration Park stands at the northern perimeter of the campus which was once the site of the famed Ambassador Hotel.

At its eastern edge, artists May Sun and Richard Wyatt designed sandstone and stainless steel walls with etchings and inspiring quotes to honor Robert Kennedy's legacy to social justice. The paving around the art walls is embedded with recycled blue glass and an array of LED lights which sparkle at night like a constellation. Moving west, visitors first step down into a two-level garden, with double rows of trees, turf, decomposed granite walkways, and seating. Finally, visitors arrive at an area marking the Ambassador Hotel's former entry drive, where an original pylon and restored fountain remain.
