SHORE HOTEL

SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA

Architect: Gensler

Shore Hotel is located in a Southern California beach community and across from Palisades Park, a 26-acre park which stretches along a coastal bluff overlooking the ocean.  Working with Gensler Architects, AHBE's overall landscape design was inspired by the transition of the coastal landscape into the urban environment.  The hotel’s public courtyard, located between the building and the street, represents the extension of the ocean bluffs into the city.  AHBE’s designers used sedimentary wall planters, bluff-colored stone, and an all-native coastal sage plant palette to incorporate elements of Palisades Park into the landscape. A fountain feature makes a reference to the ocean and its runnel system starts from inside the hotel and continues to the public open space. The project also features an infiltration tank and retention basin that is hidden beneath the private courtyard.  This tank will harvest water runoff and control stormwater, demonstrating sustainability within a pragmatic application.
