Martin L. King Jr. Medical Ctr Master Plan

Willowbrook, Los Angeles, California

Client: Los Angeles County
Architect: Gensler

The Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Center Campus Master Plan focuses on the future development of a 42-acre campus and goes beyond its campus boundaries to apply a concept of healthy community to a broader area.  Through a collaborative community process, we helped to develop a plan for a center of health and wellness utilizing existing and proposed health, education and economic development resources.  The master plan’s primary organizing element, referred to as the “Wellness Spine,” enhances connectivity between the campus and the neighborhood and promotes an active lifestyle with programs and elements for walking, biking, recreation, fitness, food, nutrition, and, principally, healthcare.  The plan’s overall strategy maximizes the usability and flexibility of open space resources.

The American Society of Landscape Architects, Southern California Chapter presented AHBE with a 2014 Quality of Life Design Honor Award for this project. According to the Design Award Jury Panel, the project team designed "a sophisticated system of integrating wellness and health throughout a medical community development."
