The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) selected RNL Design to lead a consultant team in the transformation of an existing rail station into a mobility hub and community space. LA Metro had four goals for the project: 1) expand station capacity; 2) improve multi-modal connections; 3) address safety and security concerns; and 4) enhance connections to the surrounding community. The nearly 15 acre site will have 20,000 sq. ft. of buildings and other improvements, including a new mobility/bike hub, extended platform, park-and-ride, bus loading bays, better security lighting, and Transit Security and Customer Service Center.

The new station design also features a civic plaza that provides transit users with new landscape and pedestrian amenities, and improved access to the surrounding neighborhood. The station improvements will allow for easier transfers between the Blue and Green light rail lines and connector buses at the station. Sustainable design was incorporated with the use of drought-tolerant regionally-appropriate plant palette, a cistern for water reuse, and a structural soil system to mitigate stormwater requirements and help support the resiliency of new canopy trees. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2018.
